Shop History

Wolf & Thorn was born from a studio that already had history in Penn Yan. What started as The Tattoo Shop in 2017 still carries the same foundation — now with a new name and the years ahead.

  1. 2017

    The Tattoo Shop opens

On September 1, 2017, Gump Ingram opened The Tattoo Shop in Penn Yan, New York. From day one it was built to be a steady, community-rooted studio — a place where locals and travelers around Keuka Lake could get solid work done without the pretense.

  2. 2020

    Through the pandemic

Like every small business, the shop faced the uncertainty of COVID-19. Appointments paused, routines shifted, and the doors stayed closed longer than anyone wanted. But the shop made it through — kept alive by loyal clients and the decision to keep showing up.

  3. 2025

A new chapter: Wolf & Thorn

In 2025, ownership changed hands and The Tattoo Shop became Wolf & Thorn. The name is new, but the chair, the walls, and the standard of work carry on what Gump built. The shop is now growing into its own identity while honoring the foundation that came before it.

  4. Today

    Still in Penn Yan

Nearly nine years after opening, Wolf & Thorn remains a working tattoo shop on the west side of Keuka Lake. Two artists, one chair at a time, no rushed work — and still part of the same community that helped it survive.

FAQ

The questions we get asked most. Anything else, just ask in your inquiry.

Do I need an appointment, or do you take walk-ins?
Most work is booked ahead through the inquiry form above. We take walk-ins when a chair is open — call the shop the same day to check.
How much will my tattoo cost?
Price depends on size, placement, detail, and how many sessions it takes. Send your idea through the inquiry form and we'll quote it after we see references.
Is a deposit required?
Yes. A deposit holds your appointment and comes off the final session. It's non-refundable but transferable with 48 hours notice.
How old do I have to be?
18 or older with valid photo ID, no exceptions.
Can you cover up or rework an old tattoo?
Often, yes. Send a clear, well-lit photo of the existing piece with your inquiry and we'll tell you honestly what's possible.
How should I prepare for my session?
Eat a real meal, hydrate, sleep well, skip alcohol the night before, and wear clothing that gives easy access to the area.
Do you offer touch-ups?
Free touch-ups on our own work within six months of healing, as long as aftercare was followed.

Aftercare

Your tattoo is an open wound for the first week. How it looks in ten years depends heavily on the next fourteen days. Follow this, and call us if anything looks off.

Healing timeline

  1. First 2–4 hours

Leave the wrap on for as long as your artist tells you — usually 2 to 4 hours for a standard bandage. If you were sent home in a second-skin film, leave it on 24 hours to 3 days as instructed.

  2. Day 1

Wash with clean hands, lukewarm water, and unscented antibacterial soap. Pat dry with a paper towel — never a bath towel. Let it air dry 10 minutes, then apply a thin layer of unscented lotion or aftercare balm.

  3. Days 2–6

Wash twice a day and moisturize 2–3 times a day. A thin layer only: a suffocated tattoo heals badly. Some plasma, ink, and tightness is normal.

  4. Days 7–14

Flaking and itching start. Do not pick, scratch, or peel. Keep moisturizing and let the skin release on its own.

  5. Weeks 3–6

The surface looks healed but the deeper layers are still settling. Keep it out of the sun and keep moisturizing. Final color settles around week 6.

Avoid

  • · Soaking — no lakes, pools, hot tubs, or long baths for 2–3 weeks. Keuka can wait.
  • · Direct sun and tanning beds until fully healed, then SPF 30+ forever.
  • · Picking, scratching, or peeling flakes.
  • · Tight clothing or gear that rubs the fresh work.
  • · Gym sessions that soak the area in sweat for the first few days.
  • · Pets sleeping against fresh work.

When to call us

Spreading redness, heat, swelling that worsens after day three, yellow-green discharge, or a fever means you should call us and see a doctor. Reach the shop at (607) 590-0147.

Free touch-ups on our own work within six months of healing — just get in touch.
